What’s Eating Aunt Debbie?

There’s a lot going on in the world today. We’re all having our own struggles with this, that, and the other. I find that writing about what’s bothering me, helps me so I’ve started this piece called, “What’s Eating Aunt Debbie.” Some things may not be that big of a deal, but it still bothers me. Some things you may or may not agree with and that’s fine. Don’t agree. I don’t care. Just move on to another blog. Rude comments will be deleted. It’s not that I can’t handle different opinions. I just get sick and tired of being slammed for MINE.

I don’t know about you, but I’m really glad WordPress has a spam filter! I guess idiots have nothing better to do than to seek out other idiots…but I’m not an idiot. I have a few words for those who leave spam comments:

*I am not interested in your Viagra, Cialis, or other sexual enhancement drugs. Nor am I interested in cheap antibiotics. In fact, I am not interested in anything you would try to sell me via a comment on my blog. If I want something, I know how to find it and I would buy from a reputable source, no matter what it is.

*If you are upset that I have “too many words” on my blog and “not enough photos” perhaps Where’s Waldo would be more appropriately suited for your IQ. There are many preschool picture books available, too. You can find them on Amazon or at Walmart, but maybe you should have a grown-up help you with that.

*If you’re going to comment on my blog, it might get past the spam filters if the comment had anything whatsoever to do with the post you’re commenting on! Come on!

*And I have no idea what language this is: kflwgfywehkwiohfwkjefskjf BUT knock it off! Seriously. Are you just hitting keys on the keyboard?

Over 45,000 COVID-19 cases in one day in the US! That was last Friday! Wear a freakin’ mask and use social distancing! Social distancing was helping. Wearing a mask was helping. States started opening up (too early IMO) and now we are getting slammed with more and more cases; some record highs being reported.

EU will ban US travelers. Can you blame them? We don’t have a handle on the virus and we never will as long as people won’t take some responsibility. This isn’t just about the individual and individual freedom of choice! This is about our communities, our society, our future. Wear a mask and use social distancing. Stop going to parties, bars, the beach, and to Church. It’s just temporary, for cripes sake. Don’t be a baby.

Oh, and that music festival that’s being planned? The one they are calling “Herd Immunity Fest” – yeah, that’s the stupidest fucking thing I’ve heard – no, I take that back. As long as Donald Trump is in office, every day I will hear “the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” If you think it’s a good idea for everyone to “just get the virus and be done with it” then you seriously need to read some personal accounts of how awful this virus really is!

To those who think you can get CO2 poisoning from wearing a mask or that the particles will still pass through a mask when you breathe out: If either of those were FACTS, then doctors and nurses would not wear masks during surgical procedures. Some surgeries last for hours. Think about it. If they could get CO2 poisoning from wearing a mask, they’d be passing out in the middle of surgeries! They wear a surgical mask “to prevent the passage of germs from the surgeon’s nose and mouth into the patient’s wound and to protect the surgeon’s face from sprays and splashes from the patient.” Granted, a cloth mask would be less protection than a surgical mask BUT it’s better than no protection at all. We should all be wearing one, especially where social distancing is not attainable. None of us know if we are ASYMPTOMATIC or PRE-SYMPTOMATIC unless we get tested. We’re all in this together. Why not protect each other?

Well, that’s What’s Eating Aunt Debbie. Thanks for reading my blog! Have a great week! Until next time, I bid you adieu.

Friday’s Funnies – My Faves This Week

Well, Happy Freakin’ Friday, folks! I hope this week has been a good one for you. It’s been a boring one here in my neck of the woods. Dad and I have been stuck at home for 113 long-ass boring days. One day is the same as the next. I don’t even know what month it is. Kidding, just kidding. It’s almost the month of Jucember, right? Kidding again. Sheesh. I’m not that out of it.

I hope this week’s funnies will make you laugh, or at least smile. We all need something to smile about these days. Here’s your weekly dose of funnies!! Enjoy!

Do you have a favorite? I think mine has to be the cat with googly-eyes!! That one one really made me laugh. I hope you enjoyed this week’s funnies! Have a super weekend! Be safe and wear a mask to slow the virus.

7 Shows To Put On Your Watch List

If you’re like me, you’re looking for something to watch since you’re spending more time at home. Maybe you want crime-drama, something quirky, or something to tickle your funny bone. We could all use suggestions from time to time, don’t you think? I’ve put together a short list of some shows you may (or may not) enjoy. It just depends on your own personal tastes. I hope this list is helpful to someone!

Prodigal Son – This show is amazing! It stars Tom Payne (The Walking Dead’s Jesus) and Michael Sheen (Underworld, Good Omens). Payne’s character, Malcolm Bright, is the son of Martin Whitley, famous surgeon and serial killer dad (Sheen) who is in prison for his gruesome crimes. Malcolm is a forensic profiler, working with the NYPD. Could Malcolm be just like his father? Renewed for Season 2.

Fox Network

Threesome – A silly but hilarious show from the UK. Threesome had me in stitches! Three best friends (one girl, two guys – one is gay) end up in a drunken threesome while partying. Girl gets pregnant and craziness and laughter follow as they try to navigate through the situation. From 2011. Sadly, only 2 seasons.

Comedy.co.uk

The Neighborhood – I never cared much for Cedric the Entertainer but he’s hilarious in this show. With a wife, and 2 dumb as hell sons, they try to navigate the weirdness of having white neighbors in their black neighborhood. The thing is, the white neighbors are oblivious to how things are in the ‘hood and try way too hard at times to fit in. Renewed for Season 3.

CBS.com

Hunters – Outstanding! I didn’t think I’d like this show due to the subject matter. Hunters takes place in the 70’s and focuses on a group of Nazi Hunters; Jews who are ready to get their revenge and justice. The gang quickly discover a new conspiracy boiling. With a serious plot twist at the end of the first season, that I didn’t see coming, it will leave you wanting the next season NOW! Based on true events. Stars Al Pacino.

Amazon Video

Killing Eve – I never watched this show on tv but was desperate for something different to watch on Netflix. Well, I found it. Killing Eve is definitely different! And quirky as hell. An MI5 security officer chases a young, intelligent female assassin, which leads to some violent scenes and odd situations. Stars Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer. 3 seasons; I have yet to see Season 3.

Hulu.com

Six Feet Under – A friend of mine suggested this series. It’s quite a few years old (2001-2005) but I really enjoyed watching this show’s very screwed up family trying to run a funeral home after the patriarch of the family dies. Many comical situations, dysfunctional people at best, and very adult situations. 5 seasons. Stars Michael C. Hall. (Dexter)

HBO.com

Yellowstone – I’ve only just started this series; it’s a great story so far and is well acted. Kevin Costner plays the patriarch of a ranching family fighting with modern developers and the Native Americans wanting their land back. The family members all have a story of their own. Don’t let the sexually overt daughter put you off; there’s a story to be told. Currently airing Season 3.

Paramount Network

Have you seen any of these shows? What are your thoughts? It’s really hard for me to find shows to watch most of the time. I don’t like romance, romance-comedy, superhero/villains, anime, westerns (for the most part), or horror movies. It makes things a bit more complicated…not to mention time consuming! I spend way too much time trying to find shows to watch, so if you have suggestions for me, lay ’em on me!! Please and thank you!

70’s Musical Inspiration

If you grew up in the 70’s the musical and educational cartoons of Schoolhouse Rock probably still echo in your brain. We all learned different things on Saturday mornings just watching these little cartoon shorts. Do you know what I learned? (Aside from the obvious, I mean.)

I learned that anything – ANYTHING – can be turned into a song. To this day, I make up songs about all kinds of things. This “skill” of mine is in part, the result of watching Schoolhouse Rock. I say ‘in part’ because there was something else – I should say someone else – I learned this from. I will explain after the following videos from Schoolhouse Rock:

~~~
I think y’all might also remember Mac Davis if you grew up in the 70’s! He had several hit country music songs (Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me, It’s Hard To Be Humble, and In The Ghetto, to name just a few) and he had a variety show once upon a time. I recall at the end of his tv show he would go into the audience and ask for phrases that he could make up a song about. He would then just make something up on the spot, and it was always hilarious! His sense of humor and his ability to make shit up like that was amazing to me as a child! It was the best part of the show. I couldn’t find much in the line of his improv on YouTube, but I think you might get a kick out of what I did find:
I spend much of my days of this crappy “2020 Isolation Game” making up songs. (Of course, I have always done this sort of thing, I just do it more now!) Some days are more ‘musical’ than others but I always crack myself up!
Thank you, Schoolhouse Rock and Mac Davis, for inspiring me, teaching me, molding me, and entertaining me. It is very much appreciated!
A Glimpse Into The Past and Father’s Day
As you must know by now, my Dad is my best friend. He’s been the glue that keeps things moving smoothly, the comic relief, and the man who helped me raise my kids when their own father couldn’t be bothered to even write or call.
Dad and I haven’t always been close. That wasn’t his choice, nor mine. I know people get sick of the blame always being placed upon the mother, but in this case it was definitely my mother’s fault.
When I was a little girl, my mother pretty much had me scared to death of my Dad. She would comment things like, “Don’t let your Dad hear you say that,” or “Better clean up that mess before your Dad gets home.” She always ended those warnings with remarks about being spanked or sent to my room. I don’t recall my bedroom ever being messy. I remember Dad sometimes working overtime and not being home for dinner. In order to get me to finish everything on my plate, Mom would warn me of the consequences if I didn’t finish by the time Dad came home. Often she gave me portions that I’m positive were too big for my little tummy. I was a scared little girl.
When I was a little older, Mom kept me in line much the same way. She always made Dad out to be the bad guy. One time I was 5 minutes late from walking home from school and she told me how lucky I was that Dad wasn’t home! I remember running home from school many times after that to avoid the wrath of my father. Of course, Dad was never the authoritarian meany-head Mom made him out to be.
When I was around 12 or 13 years old, I wanted to start shaving my legs and Mom showed me how but told me, “Just don’t tell your Dad. He’ll be mad as hell.” And when I started wearing makeup, I sneaked it because I knew what she would say. I would buy a little makeup with my babysitting money and put it on when I got to the bus stop in the mornings, and took it off on the bus on the way home from school.
I could go on with more examples but you get the idea. There was a lot of manipulation going on.
Dad and I became closer as I entered adulthood. Somehow, Mom knew then that she couldn’t do what she had always done. She had lost her control. Once she left us (her family) behind and left the state, things began to change. I don’t know how anyone could be afraid of my Dad. I don’t know how I could have ever been so afraid of him. It just goes to show you how impressionable small children are. Dad was never anything but fun and funny – if you can visualize a 6-foot tall man riding a tricycle, then you’ll get a good idea of what I mean.
Dad is much older now, 83 and counting. He’s been a great Dad even when Mom made him out to be strict and mean. He’s been there for me when shit has hit the fan full force, and has been there for my kids as they were growing up. I don’t know what I would have done without him.
For Father’s Day this year, I collected funds from my children, my sisters, I threw in my share, and purchased a pole chain saw for Dad. I had extra funds so I also added a battery and charger for the pole saw. He won’t use a regular chain saw anymore. He’s wise enough to know that it would be dangerous for an 83 year old man who sometimes loses his balance to use one. A pole saw is a bit safer since a stumble would result in the saw part landing further away from him. He just needs to remove some tall bushy limbs off some shrubs and trees around the house. Nothing real major. I will keep an eye on him like I always do.
To end the day, my son, his wife and little boy came to visit. They brought wine. Dad loves wine. The Hudster (my grandson) warmed up to us quite nicely. He doesn’t see us often so prior to this visit, he was a bit leery of us. Dad and I both got hugs and The Hudster was playful and silly. I enjoyed the visit as much as Dad did. Dad loves playing with little kids, always has. I hope he has many years left to play!
Take care of your fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and all the father figures in your life. They have shaped the person you’ve become. You won’t have them forever. Treasure the stories and the memories. Happy Father’s Day, to all the great fathers out there and especially to my Dad – the BEST FRIEND and FATHER a daughter could ever have!
Dad, as a young man fresh out of high school. Age 18.
Dad and baby me… He was making me laugh way back then!
Dad, 2020, age 83.
