17 Years Ago Today!

It’s been 17 years since I began my blogging journey. I started blogging because I needed an outlet. I was stressed. I needed to release it. I still blog for that reason, but I’ve made friends here at WordPress who are interested in updates with me and Dad. I also like to write. I don’t claim to be a great writer, but I do enjoy it.

The problem these days is that I cannot concentrate. There’s too much noise, mostly internal. When we finally move to the new house, I’ll have my own quiet space where I can write uninterrupted. I’m hoping the internal noise will die down.

For now, I write when I can. I want to do an overhaul of this blog eventually. It needs a new look. Any ideas? I’d love to hear your suggestions.

Until next time,

Why Do People Start Blogging?

I can’t speak for every blogger out there because they all have their own reasons for blogging. Some of those reasons are:

  • to share expertise and knowledge
  • to share recipes
  • to build their brand
  • to generate income
  • to connect with family members
  • to connect with like-minded people

That’s just to name a few. I write a blog to express my feelings. I write to release the stress of everyday life. I write about personal opinions, my own experiences, and feelings. No one has to agree, and my perception of events or ideas might differ from others. Do I get myself in hot water writing such a personal blog? I do.

Having said that, I recently posted about something that happened that pissed some people off, even though no names were mentioned. I pulled the post at the request of someone who means a lot to me. That will not happen again. This is MY blog and I write what I want. I’ll always write what I want. I will also fight for the right of others to write what they want. This is America, after all.

I started blogging back in 2008, when my daughter was in a relationship that I knew would end badly. I was stressed and worried, and writing about everything I was feeling really helped. Writing made me feel calmer, so I continued and haven’t stopped. I have connected with so many people who’ve been able to relate to what I’ve written over the years. I may not have helped anyone with their problems, but just maybe I helped them feel not so alone when shit hits the fan. We are all going through life without a handbook, you know?

When I write about events involving specific people, I never use names. This keeps people anonymous. No one knows who they are. I’m not interested in exposing anyone’s identity. I’m just writing about my experiences, feelings, and my perception. Those things aren’t necessarily going to be the same for everyone involved. People perceive things differently.

10 Year Blogaversary

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I started blogging! Of course, no one read my blog back then because I kept it rather quiet. I wasn’t writing for anyone but me and it was therapeutic. It was personal. I was going through the worst time of my life and blogging was a way for me to release it, send it away.

I signed on to WordPress on August 16, 2008. My very first post came just a few days later. I remember that day and I was in a panic. I’m pretty sure what I was feeling was close to how a parent of a missing child feels — the panic, uncertainty, fear, worry….and then in my case, anger set in. Give it a read and you’ll understand what I mean.

Anyway, it wasn’t until a little over a year ago that I decided to step out of my comfort zone and make my blog more ‘visible’ to others. I started interacting with other bloggers and my number of followers increased. I also started a Facebook page for this blog, so that I could more easily share with my friends and family.

I never started blogging to gain followers. I like that some people follow and interact but the number isn’t important to me. I like to connect with people on a more personal level. I like that some people can identify with what I’m writing about or that they find it humorous. I don’t care about those who think personal blogs are boring. I’m not blogging for them. I’m blogging for me and those who care to read it.

I’m not a people pleaser anymore! If someone doesn’t like my blog, for whatever reason, they don’t have to read it. I don’t read blogs that are boring to me, either. I also don’t read blogs that shamelessly beg for donations, or always promote some product, unless of course, it’s something I am interested in purchasing). And blogs that spout the same information over and over again? Boring. I’m not saying those blogs don’t appeal to some people; they most certainly do, but they don’t appeal to me.

I appreciate those who read, follow, and comment on my posts. I just wish I had more time to read all of the wonderful, insightful, and humorous blogs out there!! Please feel free to include your blog URL in the comments below!

Thanks for reading my friends!! I appreciate you more than you know!

How my blog got started:

I was entering a new phase of my life. I was about to become a grandmother. Starting a blog seemed like the perfect way to share my life and my loves, although it turned out to be more of a therapeutic project. It remains very therapeutic for me. I have just recently made my blog more public (through Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/BeingAuntDebbie/) and have tried to write more than I use to. There were times that other things got in the way of my creativity and if you have read my past posts you may know exactly what I’m talking about. This blog is about making my way through this life, down whatever road it takes me.

My advice to new bloggers:

  1. Write what you know and about your passions. Just write!
  2. Don’t let anyone belittle you for your writing, opinions, passions or anything else. Just be you and write what you like!

It was difficult for me to pick 10 bloggers — there are so many great blogs out there! Most of the blogs I follow are on other blog formats, like Blogger, but I figured I should nominate those who are on wordpress like I am. I don’t always get to read every blog every day and that makes me sad! Here goes!
